The busy rural centre, with a population of 18 000 in its vicinity, was founded as a railway town in 1889 on fertile land between the Tararua Range and the Tasman Sea.
Levin is surrounded by rare surviving wetland forest, and abundant birdlife. Both Lake Papaitonga and Lake Horowhenua are popular picnic spots.
The wreck of the sailing ship Hyderabad thrown ashore in 1878 can be seen at Waitarere. There is also many scenic walks and locations like Tararua Forest Park and Waiopehu Native Reserve. |
